Crowdsourcing

Crowdsourcing is the process of getting work or funding, usually online, from a crowd of people. The word is a combination of the words 'crowd' and 'outsourcing'. The idea is to take work and outsource it to a crowd of workers.

Famous Example: Wikipedia. Instead of Wikipedia creating an encyclopedia on their own, hiring writers and editors, they gave a crowd the ability to create the information on their own. The result? The most comprehensive encyclopedia this world has ever seen.

Types of crowdsourcing

There are many types of crowdsourcing, and not all are done with financial motives. Crowdvoting or polling is often used as a method for getting information from crowds about their opinions, while creative crowdsourcing involves numerous individuals in a creative work. On the other end of the spectrum, crowdfunding is a special type of crowdsourced product that is used as a method for raising funds: crowdfunding seeks small amounts from many individuals to fund businesses, creative projects, charities and more

  1. CROWD LABOR

Crowd Labor helps in bridging the gap between labor supply and demand. The vastly distributed labor pool helps in virtually performing tasks that range form being simple in nature to being complex and specialized.
  2. CROWDFUNDING

This is helpful for profit as well as non profit setups. It helps in raising capital for new projects / businesses by seeking assistance from investors in the form of donation, philanthropy, sponsorships, lending and investment (in exchange for profit/revenue sharing). The monetary contributions often come from online investors or donors.
  3. CROWDSOURCING DESIGN

Crowdsourcing design is used when companies need product packaging design and logo design. The varied pool of talent outside the company can be told when to deliver the design and what will be the compensation for designing. A large number of designs then come to select from. It can also be done in the form of a competition. This method reduces the cost of designing as compared to getting the work done through freelancers or dedicated team of designers.
  4. MICRO TASKS

Micro tasks are short run tasks wherein no particular skills are required, for example, captioning of photographs for advertisement sake.
  5. MACRO TASKS

Macro tasks are opposite of micro tasks. They take long time to be completed and also require certain skill sets for the task to be completed, for example, web designing.
  6. CROWD VOTING

Crowd voting uses the choice of the community to take decisions regarding products, their designing, quality, etc. different methods are used to take votes from customers like ranking, a simple yes and no vote, etc. Google’s search engine is also developed using the concept of crowd voting.

Advantages of crowdsourcing

·         Reduce Cost

Subcontracting a graphic designer could run hundreds or even thousands of dollars, and there is no guarantee you'll like any of the designs they submit. Crowdsourcing gives you access to tens of thousands of designers for less.

·         Eliminate Overhead

Some businesses prefer to have graphic designers on staff in order to closely control the creative aspects of the business. Unfortunately this can be very cost prohibitive with salaries, payroll taxes, benefits, etc.  As well,  on-staff designers will not be fully utilized during down time.

·         Minimize Management

Every new design project needs to be managed, from conceptualization through revisions to final selection. With crowdsourcing, you submit your idea and let the tens of thousands of designers manage the project for you.

·         Maximize Options

You will most likely receive tens, hundred, and even thousands of creative options to choose from. While this could be a distraction, sites like 99Designs allows you to eliminate unappealing designs in real time, reducing the number of options as well as providing designers feedback.

·         Optimize Creativity

With no paradigms, emotional attachments, or insecurities, the designers are free to be as creative as they want. Indeed, the more creative, the more likely they will get noticed and selected.

·         Create Buzz

You can tap your professional, personal, and social networks to vote on your top choices, which will empower your fans and create excitement and anticipation for the contest.
